In Japan, he discovers a society that is vastly different from the United States, but he also encounters a mischievous kami (ghost) named Emiko who lives in the attic of his rented house. When Adrian's samurai sword disappears, he begins to suspect that Emiko may be involved, but she claims to have taken the sword to protect him. As Adrian tries to return the sword to its rightful owner, he finds himself in danger from the captain's vengeful daughter and a rogue kami.
